Text Box:

Mary Jane Miller has been Minister of Music at Heidelberg since 1990.  She works with the pastoral team to plan worship, directs our choir and works with our soloists to provide music for a variety of worship settings.

Mary Jane began her early musical training in piano and continued her organ studies with Gerald Mummert, Director of Music, at Christ Lutheran Church in York.  While attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, she studied with Ann Labounsky Steele.  Before coming to Heidelberg Mary Jane served several local Catholic, Lutheran and Presbyterian Churches.

Mary Jane Miller

Director of Music

Built in 1930 by the Austin Organ Co. of Hartford, CT, the Heidelberg organ remains a fantastic example of organ building in the 1930’s.

The instrument is made up of 35 ranks of pipes and five divisions that are played by a new 3 manual custom console.  The organ features lush strings and celestes, various solo reeds, flutes and flute celeste, powerful diapasons and two high pressure reeds.  In short, it can produce sounds so quiet and sweet and also the thunderous sounds of full organ and every sound in between.

The organ façade and case were reused and modified from an earlier instrument.  In the mid 1990’s the organ was reactioned and solid state switching and a new custom built 3 manual draw knob console were installed.  At the same time, both a new 7 1/2 hp 3 phase organ \ blower and a new D. C. power supply were added.  The façade (case pipes) was removed and custom painted to resemble the original look of the organ case when first installed at Heidelberg.

The instrument is a treat to play and to hear and lends a very special sound to the worship at Heidelberg.  The organ and the resonance of the worship space at Heidelberg are a perfect match to each other. There is no other organ in the York area with this sound.

You can hear the Heidelberg organ during our regular Sunday services, at special events, or on First Fridays from 6-7:30 PM when the church is open for our HeidelBean coffeehouse.
