Greetings and welcome to

Heidelberg United Church of Christ

In 1867, when the existing Reformed Churches in York wanted to continue to worship in their native German, a group of forward thinkers decided it was time for an English speaking church in the city.  Heidelberg was born.

Heidelberg was named after the Heidelberg Catechism, an influential document written in 1563 as a series of 129 questions and answers to teach the Christian faith.  Students were taught to memorize and recite the catechism.

Now, almost 150 years later, Heidelberg continues to seek innovative ways to express our Christian faith in an ever changing world.  We still embrace the questions, but are less likely to offer rote answers.  As a progressive, vibrant, and welcoming Christian congregation, we encourage all to explore the faith, to search for answers and to tell the ancient story of justice, acceptance and love in creative and new ways.

All that we are, and all that we do, springs from our belief that God lives and moves among us.  Through worship, the arts, service, study and play, we experience the Holy and give it expression that we might be partners with God in the healing of this world.

We are so delighted that you found your way here and trust these pages will provide a glimpse into who we are as a community of faith.

Know that whoever you are, and wherever you are on life’s journey,  for an hour, or a lifetime, we welcome you to Heidelberg United Church of Christ.

Grace and Peace,

The Rev. Susan Dheedene
